Summary

Lençóis Maranhenses is a coastal dune landscape in northeastern Brazil. Rainwater collects in hollows between pale sand ridges, creating freshwater lagoons whose shapes and extent change with the seasons.

The contrast is extraordinary: a landscape that looks like desert is patterned with clear water. Repeated curves of sand and lagoons produce both immense panoramas and small, constantly changing compositions.

The story of a place

White dunes and freshwater lagoons in a changing landscape.

Lençóis Maranhenses looks deceptively simple from a distance: pale sand, curved ridges and patches of blue or green water. On foot, the changes in scale, surface and light become the story. Seasonal rain fills depressions between the dunes, creating an experience that differs substantially through the year.

The protected landscape is not just a backdrop for a short photographic stop. Its settlements, coastal setting and fragile systems deserve care. A thoughtful route balances time in the dunes with realistic travel distances and local guidance.

History, landscape
and context.

Lençóis Maranhenses National Park (Parque Nacional dos Lençóis Maranhenses) is a national park in Maranhão state in northeastern Brazil, just east of the Baía de São José. Protected on June 2, 1981, the 155,000 ha (380,000-acre) park includes 70 km (43 mi) of coastline, and an interior composed of rolling sand dunes. During the rainy season, the valleys among the dunes fill with freshwater lagoons, prevented from draining by the impermeable rock beneath.
