Summary

Mount Kilimanjaro is a volcanic mountain in Tanzania and Africa’s highest summit. Forest, moorland and increasingly sparse high ground rise from the surrounding country towards its broad summit landscape.

Its isolated height gives the mountain an exceptional presence. The sequence of environments on its slopes reveals how altitude can create a whole succession of landscapes within one mountain.

The story of a place

A high volcanic mountain rising above the surrounding country.

Kilimanjaro's scale is especially striking when seen from the lower landscape. Its volcanic summits and changing vegetation zones offer a sequence of environments, not simply a high point to reach. A distant view and a multi-day ascent are very different ways of experiencing it.

For a climb, the central questions are route, pace, support and individual suitability. The mountain's fame should not push those decisions aside. A well-supported lower-level experience may be a better choice than an ascent compressed into too little time.

For the curious reader

History, landscape
and context.

Mount Kilimanjaro is a large dormant volcano in Tanzania. It is the highest mountain in Africa and the highest free-standing mountain above sea level in the world, at 5,895 m (19,341 ft) above sea level and 4,900 m (16,100 ft) above its plateau base. It is also the highest volcano in the Eastern Hemisphere and the fourth most prominent peak on Earth. Uhuru Peak is the highest summit on Kibo's crater rim. The Tanzania National Parks Authority, a Tanzanian government agency, and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization both list the height of Uhuru Peak as 5,895 m (19,341 ft), based on a British survey in 1952.
