Summary

Jiuzhaigou is a protected mountain valley in Sichuan, China, known for clear lakes, waterfalls and forested slopes. Mineral-rich water, submerged trees and changing vegetation create a succession of unusually vivid blues, greens and autumn colours.

Its beauty lies in the relationship between transparency, colour and moving water. The lakes are different from one another, so the valley reveals a whole water-shaped landscape rather than one celebrated viewpoint.

The story of a place

Clear lakes and falling water in a forested mountain valley.

Jiuzhaigou is a landscape of changing water. Lakes, cascades and forest create a sequence rather than one defining viewpoint, with mineral-rich shallows, submerged wood and reflections offering very different kinds of detail. Colour is part of the appeal, but photographs rarely convey how much the view depends on light and angle.

The park is best approached as a choice of valleys and walks. Transport between areas can help, yet the quietest rewards often come from lingering at one lake. Tibetan cultural connections also belong to the story of the place.
