The story of a place
A planned royal city whose colour is only the first impression.
Jaipur's appeal extends from the street plan and palace architecture to the instruments of Jantar Mantar. Amber adds a hilltop setting outside the central city, making this a varied rather than single-site entry.
The busy modern city surrounds these monuments. A useful itinerary separates central walking from outlying visits and makes time to understand craft and astronomical design.

The essential experience
Make time for this.
Explore Jantar Mantar with clear interpretation, then compare its forms with the nearby palace streets.
Explore the highlights
Look a little closer.
Jaipur’s planned streets connect palace courtyards with the city’s distinctive pink façades.
Astronomical instruments
Consider function before treating them as sculpture.
Screened façades
Look at how openings manage light and visibility.
Amber's setting
Notice the relationship between fortifications and hills.

History, landscape
and context.
Jaipur is the capital and the largest city of the north-western Indian state of Rajasthan. As of 2011, the city had a population of 3.1 million, making it the tenth most populous city in the country. Located 268 km (167 miles) from the national capital New Delhi, Jaipur is also known as the Pink City due to the dominant colour scheme of its buildings in the old city. Jaipur was founded in 1727 by Sawai Jai Singh II, the Kachhwaha Rajput ruler of Amer, after whom the city is named. It is one of the earliest planned cities of modern India, designed by Vidyadhar Bhattacharya.
