Summary

Cotopaxi is an active volcano in Ecuador’s Andes, rising above high grasslands within a national park. Its regular cone and summit ice contrast with the broad exposed terrain surrounding the mountain.

Cotopaxi’s clear volcanic form stands within a vast upland setting. The contrast between pale summit, dark slopes and open grassland makes the mountain’s scale especially legible.

The story of a place

An Andean cone above the high grasslands

Cotopaxi is a mountain whose shape helps define an entire landscape. The volcanic cone rises above high open grasslands, with cloud, snow and changing light continually altering its appearance. The park can be rewarding even when the summit is not the objective.

The distinction between looking at the volcano and climbing it is essential. Lower outings still take place at significant altitude, while summit attempts require specialist preparation and current access permission. A visit should respond to volcanic monitoring and park instructions, not an expectation created by a photograph.
