The story of a place
Colour, courtyards and volcano-framed streets
Antigua’s appeal lies in the relationship between its ordered streets and the dramatic land around them. Low façades, courtyards and church ruins sit beneath volcanic slopes. A walk through the centre reveals both the ambition of a colonial capital and the vulnerability of building in an earthquake-prone setting.
The city should be read as more than a series of photogenic doorways. The monumental churches, administrative buildings and surviving street grid belong to a history of colonial rule, religion and trade. Contemporary Antigua is also a working city, and its markets, workshops and ordinary streets deserve attention alongside the restored monuments.

The essential experience
Make time for this.
Walk between the central square, one ruined religious complex and a quieter courtyard, leaving time to compare architecture that survives with spaces open to the sky.
Explore the highlights
Look a little closer.
Antigua’s coloured façades and courtyard doors sit beneath a backdrop of volcanoes.
Street grid
Look along a straight street to see how the volcanoes frame the planned city.
Ruined interiors
Compare the weight of surviving walls with the missing roofs.
Courtyards
Notice how a modest street entrance can lead to a large inward-looking space.

History, landscape
and context.
Antigua Guatemala, commonly known as Antigua or La Antigua, is a city in the central highlands of Guatemala. The city was the capital of the Captaincy General of Guatemala from 1543 through 1773, with much of its Baroque-influenced architecture and layout dating from that period. Antigua Guatemala serves as the capital of the homonymous municipality and the Sacatepéquez Department. Because of its outstanding Spanish Baroque-influenced architecture, layout, churches, and ruins, and the city's importance during the early colonial period of the country, Antigua Guatemala was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.

Turn curiosity into a visit
Plan your visit.
- Physical demands
- Cobblestones and uneven pavements make a slow walking pace useful. Volcano excursions are separate, more demanding undertakings.
- The practical detail
- Do not turn a city visit into an unplanned volcano climb: allow separate preparation, time and qualified local guidance for mountain excursions.
