Bagan's panorama is compelling because it contains so many distinct monuments. At ground level, differences in material, proportion, interior light and surviving decoration bring individuality back into the scene. Interpretation can turn a sequence of similar silhouettes into a story of building, patronage and belief.
Choose a small set of currently accessible temples with local guidance. Do not assume that a viewpoint or climbing access seen in an older photograph remains permitted.
