Summary

Sabratha is an ancient coastal city in Libya, with a remarkable Roman theatre and a wider archaeological landscape. Temples, baths and urban remains record a port connected with Mediterranean exchange.

The theatre gives a dramatic focus to a much larger city. Its elaborate stage architecture and the surrounding ruins reveal both public spectacle and the everyday organisation of an ancient port.

Getting there

Sabratha lies on Libya’s coast west of Tripoli. Treat it as part of a professionally arranged Libya itinerary only after checking advice for the intended route.

Plan ahead

Check current Libya travel advice before committing money. Entry documentation, local permissions, transport and a guide need specialist arrangements; an old tour listing does not establish access.

For the curious reader

History, landscape and context.

Sabratha, in the Zawiya District of Libya, was the westernmost of the ancient "three cities" of Roman Tripolis, alongside Oea and Leptis Magna. From 2001 to 2007 it was the capital of the former Sabratha wa Sorman District. It lies on the Mediterranean coast about 70 km (43 mi) west of modern Tripoli.
