Summary

Melaka is a historic port city on Malaysia’s Strait of Malacca. Streets, religious buildings and trading architecture record successive maritime connections and the communities that developed around them.

Its significance lies in the traces of exchange. Different traditions remain visible close together, allowing the historic port to be understood through both landmark buildings and ordinary streets.

For the curious reader

History, landscape and context.

Malacca City (Malay: Bandaraya Melaka or Kota Melaka) is the capital city of the Malaysian state of Malacca. It is the oldest Malaysian city on the Strait of Malacca, having become a successful entrepôt in the era of the Malacca Sultanate. The city was founded in 1396 by Parameswara, a Sumatran prince who escaped to the Malay Peninsula when the Srivijaya Empire fell to the Majapahit. Following the establishment of the Malacca Sultanate in 1400, the city drew the attention of traders from the Middle East, South Asia, and East Asia, as well as the Portuguese, who intended to dominate the trade route in Asia.

From inspiration to a practical plan

Plan your visit.

Physical demands
The riverside and old streets make a mostly level walk. St Paul's Hill adds a climb and steps, and the midday heat can make even short distances tiring.
The consequential detail
Museums help explain the layers of trade and colonial power that a façade-only walk misses.
