Summary

The Douro Valley is a wine-growing river landscape in Portugal. Terraces cover steep slopes above a winding river, reflecting generations of cultivation and the regional history of wine production.

The achievement is transforming difficult ground into a coherent working landscape. Repeated terraces make human labour visible across whole hillsides, with river and settlement completing the pattern.

For the curious reader

History, landscape and context.

Douro is a Portuguese wine region centred on the Douro River in the Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro region. It is sometimes referred to as the Alto Douro (upper Douro), as it is located some distance upstream from Porto, sheltered by mountain ranges from coastal influence. The region has Portugal's highest wine classification as a Denominação de Origem Controlada (DOC) and is registered as a Protected Designation of Origin under EU and UK law, and as a Geographical Indication in several other countries through bilateral agreements. In the 17th century, the region's vineyards expanded, and the earliest known mention of "Port wine" dates from 1675.
