Summary

Buenos Aires is Argentina’s capital beside the Río de la Plata. Monumental avenues, distinct neighbourhoods and a strong cultural life connect civic architecture with streets shaped by migration and successive periods of growth.

Getting there

Organise each day around a neighbourhood: the city-centre sights, Recoleta and San Telmo are separate walks. Use the city's public-transport information to connect them instead of treating the whole city as one walking circuit.

Plan ahead

Book a Teatro Colón performance or guided-tour ticket through the theatre. A tour and an evening performance are separate experiences with separate tickets.

A detail that changes the visit

Give different districts their own time rather than stitching them into a long checklist of taxi stops.

For the curious reader

History, landscape and context.

Buenos Aires, officially the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, is the capital and largest city of Argentina. It is located on the southwest of the Río de la Plata. Buenos Aires is classified as an Alpha− global city, according to the GaWC 2024 ranking. The city of Buenos Aires is an autonomous district and is neither part of Buenos Aires Province nor its capital. In 1880, after the Argentine Civil War, Buenos Aires was federalized and split from Buenos Aires Province. The city limits were enlarged to include the towns of Belgrano and Flores, both now neighbourhoods of the city.
