Summary

Vienna is Austria’s capital, with imperial palaces, major museums, churches and streets shaped by successive periods of urban growth. Music and public cultural life remain important parts of the city beyond its monumental buildings.

Its strength is the concentration of art and architecture within a living capital. Grand interiors, public squares and everyday institutions reveal how imperial history continues to shape the modern city.

The story of a place

An imperial city whose cultural life extends well beyond palaces.

Vienna's broad avenues, palaces and museums provide an obvious introduction, but its appeal also lies in smaller interiors, neighbourhoods and music. Different periods sit close together, from imperial display to modern design.

Choose a few cultural priorities. The city is too rich for an itinerary that treats every major museum as a brief stop between palace photographs.

For the curious reader

History, landscape
and context.

Vienna is the capital, most populous city, and one of the nine states of Austria. It is Austria's primate city, with just over two million inhabitants. Its larger metropolitan area has a population of nearly 2.9 million, representing nearly one-third of the country's population. The city lies on the eastern edge of the Vienna Woods (Wienerwald), the northeasternmost foothills of the Alps, that separate Vienna from the more western parts of Austria, at the transition to the Pannonian Basin. It sits on the Danube, and is traversed by the highly regulated Wienfluss (Vienna River).
