Summary

Upper Svaneti is a mountain region of Georgia, with villages, cultivated ground and distinctive stone tower houses. High Caucasus peaks frame settlements whose buildings reflect a particular local history and way of life.

The towers make the human landscape as memorable as the mountains. Their relationship with houses and fields reveals a distinctive response to living in steep, isolated country.

The story of a place

Mountain settlements whose towers express a distinctive local history.

Svaneti's defensive towers rise among villages and high Caucasian scenery. Their meaning lies in the social history of the communities as well as their striking silhouettes.

Mestia and Upper Svaneti provide different experiences, and mountain roads can make short distances slow. Museums and local interpretation help avoid treating the region as a purely scenic backdrop.

History, landscape
and context.

Svaneti is a province in the northwestern part of Georgia. Running along the Greater Caucasus range, Svaneti is one of the most mountainous regions of Georgia. It is largely inhabited by the Svans, an ethnic subgroup of Georgians. Situated on the southern slopes of the central Caucasus Mountains and surrounded by 3,000–5,000 metre peaks, Svaneti is the highest inhabited area in the Caucasus. Four of the 10 highest peaks of the Caucasus are located in the region. The highest mountain in Georgia, Mount Shkhara at 5,201 metres (17,064 feet), is located in the province.
