Summary

Nyungwe is a montane rainforest in southwestern Rwanda, with rich bird life, primates and varied forest habitats. Its ridges, valleys and dense vegetation create an enclosed landscape very different from open savannah.

The forest rewards attention to small movements and layered life. Its biological richness becomes clear through the relationships between canopy, undergrowth and the animals that use them.

The story of a place

A montane rainforest best appreciated through patient observation.

Nyungwe's forest supports a remarkable variety of plants, birds and primates. The experience is often one of listening and noticing rather than continuous, obvious wildlife sightings.

Different activities require different permits and fitness levels. A canopy walk, a forest trail and a primate-tracking excursion are distinct choices rather than interchangeable ways to see the same thing.

For the curious reader

History, landscape
and context.

The Nyungwe Forest is located in southwestern Rwanda, on the border with Burundi, where it is contiguous with the Kibira National Park to the south, and Lake Kivu and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west. The Nyungwe rainforest is most likely the best preserved montane rainforest in Africa. It is located in the watershed between the basin of the Congo River to the west and the basin of the river Nile to the east. Nyungwe Forest was established in 2004 and covers an area of approximately 1,019 km2 (393 sq mi) of rainforest, bamboo, grassland, swamps, and bogs.
