The story of a place
A bridge that carries a story of connection, destruction and rebuilding.
Mostar's old bridge gives the city its defining form, spanning the Neretva between steep banks. The surrounding streets and river viewpoints reveal how a single crossing can organise an urban landscape.
The bridge's destruction during war and subsequent reconstruction are central to its meaning. A thoughtful visit includes that history rather than presenting the city as an untouched medieval scene.

The essential experience
Make time for this.
View the bridge from both banks, then use a museum or guided walk to understand its recent history.

History, landscape
and context.
Mostar is a city and the administrative centre of Herzegovina-Neretva Canton of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, an entity of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the historical capital of Herzegovina. Mostar is situated on the Neretva River and is the fifth-largest city in the country. It was named after the bridge keepers (mostari) who guarded the Stari Most (Old Bridge) over the Neretva during the Ottoman era. The Old Bridge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, commissioned by Suleiman the Magnificent in the 16th century, is one of Bosnia and Herzegovina's most visited landmarks, and is considered an exemplary piece of Islamic architecture in the Balkans.
