Summary

Mana Pools is a national park beside the Zambezi River in Zimbabwe. Floodplain, pools and woodland support abundant wildlife within a landscape shaped by seasonal water and the river’s changing course.

Its distinctive atmosphere comes from the relationship between large animals, open woodland and water. The river provides both an ecological focus and a broad setting for close wildlife encounters.

The story of a place

A great river landscape where wildlife and woodland meet.

Mana Pools is shaped by the Zambezi and its floodplain. Open woodland, channels and seasonal pools create a different safari atmosphere from an enclosed vehicle circuit around a single waterhole.

Walking and canoe-based experiences are specialist activities requiring qualified support. The apparent openness of the landscape should never be mistaken for an invitation to approach wildlife independently.

For the curious reader

History, landscape
and context.

Mana Pools National Park is a 2,196-square-kilometre (848 sq mi) wildlife conservation area and national park in northern Zimbabwe. It is a region of the lower Zambezi in Zimbabwe where the floodplain turns into a broad expanse of lakes after each rainy season. As the lakes gradually dry up and recede, the region attracts many large animals in search of water, making it one of Africa's most renowned game-viewing regions.
