Summary

The Hunza Valley is an inhabited mountain valley in northern Pakistan. Forts, villages and cultivated terraces stand beneath high peaks, with rivers and glaciers shaping the wider landscape.

The contrast between immense mountains and carefully occupied ground gives the valley its depth. Historic buildings and fields reveal how people have adapted to a setting that might otherwise seem purely wilderness.

Guide edited 29 September 2026. About practical information

The story of a place

An inhabited mountain valley where forts, fields and peaks belong together.

Hunza is a broad valley landscape rather than one viewpoint. Around Karimabad, historic forts, terraced cultivation and immense mountain backdrops reveal the relationship between settlement and difficult terrain.

Upper-valley excursions involve additional distance and different conditions. A slower plan leaves room for weather and road disruption while making time for local history rather than only distant peaks.

For the curious reader

History, landscape
and context.

The valley stretches along the Hunza River, which forms near Passu by the confluence of several streams fed by melting glaciers in the upper watershed of Karakoram range, including Shimshal, Khunjerab, Chupursan, and Misgar. Further downstream, Hopar River from Hopar Valley and Hispar River from Hispar Valley combine near Nagarkhas, and fall into Hunza River. The valley widens around Karimabad, and is home to many settlements such as Aliabad, Chalt, Nasirabad and Rahimabad.
