Summary

The Ennedi Massif is a sandstone landscape in northeastern Chad, with arches, towers, valleys and water sites. Rock art and traces of human use add a long cultural record to its dramatic desert forms.

Natural architecture and human memory meet in this distinctive desert landscape. Monumental rock formations frame small surviving details of life, showing that the desert is neither uniform nor historically empty.

The story of a place

Sandstone architecture and a long human record

The Ennedi Massif brings together enormous sandstone forms and evidence of people who have lived within a changing Saharan environment. Arches, towers and sheltered spaces are visually spectacular, but rock art and water sources add the depth that makes the landscape more than a collection of shapes.

Distances, remoteness and regional security conditions are central to considering any visit. This guide recognises the place’s significance; it is not a statement that travel is currently advisable. Research can be rewarding even when the right decision is to keep a destination on a future list.

For the curious reader

History, landscape
and context.

The Ennedi Plateau is located in the northeast of Chad, in the regions of Ennedi-Ouest and Ennedi-Est. It is considered a part of the group of mountains known as the Ennedi Massif found in Chad, which is one of the nine countries that make up the Sahelian belt that spans the Atlantic Ocean to Sudan. The Ennedi is a sandstone bulwark in the middle of the Sahara, which was formed by erosion from wind and temperature. Just under one-tenth of World Heritage Sites are in Africa, but the site was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Site in February 2016.
