Reading a historical map

Treating a map as evidence of a maker's knowledge, purpose and perspective at a particular time.

A way of understanding.

Historical maps can reveal routes, vanished buildings, former coastlines and changing names. They can also omit whole communities, exaggerate strategic features or express claims to territory. A decorative appearance does not make a map neutral or geographically accurate.

Begin with the date, author, scale and intended audience. Then compare a small area with a modern map or the surviving landscape. Differences may reflect real physical change, a different way of measuring, or the priorities of the mapmaker. One possibility should not be assumed without further evidence.

An old map is a powerful companion to a city walk or a heritage essay. It is not a current navigation tool. Use it to frame questions, then use reliable present-day information for access and routes.
