A way into the collection

Leave room for uncertainty

Scale changes the experience of a place. A dune, glacier or seemingly endless salt flat can make ordinary distances hard to judge. Light changes it again, revealing shapes and colours that a single photograph can only begin to suggest.

Some wonders do not belong to one permanent pin on the map. A total solar eclipse follows a particular path, while the Northern Lights depend on conditions in the sky. Their guides explain why timing and location have to be considered together.
